I love watches, but I’m generally not a fan of wearable technology. Thanks to its slim profile and minimalist approach, fitness trackers are fine. But when it comes to smartwatches, I’m defining a “hard cell.”
When Amazfit, a prominent producer of these devices, had the opportunity to test new devices T-REX2 model ($ 230), I started thinking. It’s healthy to challenge your preconceptions. After all, the future is here, and maybe I’m a dinosaur with this particular equation.
A survey revealed that Amazfit is a sub-brand of Huami Technology in China. And far from the fly-by-night fitness wearables offered in other spaces, the technique seemed to be generally appreciated. I checked the specs, increased the size of the design, and accepted the offer.
Here’s what I learned during the week when the T-REX2 roamed my wrist:

The size of the watch is symmetrical 47.1×47.1 mm and height 13.65 mm. Combined with a 22mm silicone strap and a polymer alloy case, it weighs only 66.5g and is water resistant to 100m.
Its array of sensors provides 15 strength training and smart recognition of 8 sporting movements. Also, the 500mAh battery lasts up to 10 days with frequent use and 24 days under normal circumstances.
To unleash all this technology, buyers need to download and sign up for the Zepp Fitness App. It’s a functionally designed program, but I’m not too keen on the idea that you absolutely must have it to set up a watch. When I was done, I started testing.
As a fitness device
If you can press the skin to measure, the T-REX2 may have a reading. Thanks to the watch’s 1.39 inch AMOLED screen, these are easy to scroll.
I was impressed with its resolution and sensitivity. Both worked much smoother than expected. Navigating the menu is a simple process and most options (both the clock itself and Zepp) are self-explanatory.
Step trackers are the cornerstone among smartwatch enthusiasts. And despite the moaning, this turned out to be an interesting feature. I knew that if I took 8 hours on my feet, many steps would occur, but I didn’t know how many steps there were.
Similarly, having a beat tracker per minute on my wrist was an interesting experience. I checked frequently all day, relaxing on the sofa and sweating in the gym.
However, pay attention to the grip. If you’re holding the Stairmaster’s heart rate sensor bar, like me, something about hand stabilization will ruin the T-REX2’s pulse counter. For example, I showed 71 bpm, but the machine showed more than twice that. When I waved my hand freely, the smaller device became more accurate.
Sleep tracking is also a popular tool. After night, I didn’t know what it meant to measure rest, so I was scrooge about this too. I already know how I slept, but why do I need a device to check it? But I admit, it was great to see the small graphs and stats package that T-REX2 put together.
T-REX2 as a clock
In general, my level of comfort with respect to location tracking and biometric data is closer to the “tin foil hat” crowd than I would like to admit. That’s why I left my smartwatch disconnected from my cell phone for a significant part of this test. And leave it to your own device T-REX2 It worked surprisingly well.
After a few days of wear, the battery never dropped below 50%. I didn’t use many of the more thirsty features of the watch, so consider this anecdote. But I don’t think there is any reason to doubt the Amazfit’s stated numbers.
When it comes to battery drain, one of the first changes I made was to activate “always on” mode. Because when I have my watch on my wrist, I want to be able to see the time from any angle. And when the switch was turned on, the T-REX2 was fully functional. The variety of faces is great and the display is generally crisp and clear.
However, it is not very accurate in itself. The Antezard T-REX2 operated at ± 5 seconds per day, which is not suitable for quartz watches.
There is also a water problem. This Amazfit bathes, but it’s not happy. Unless you turn on the screen lock, rain or water drops from the shower will confuse the touch sensor.
Conclusion
After all, I still don’t think I’m a smartwatch enthusiast. But it’s more of a “me” issue than a hardware issue. The Amazfit T-REX2 It was a fun introduction to this genre, and I feel like I’m underestimating functionality here.
