On an abandoned golf course in Rome, NY-Biloxi, Mississippi, greens have grown, fairways have become part of the rough, and teaboxes have disappeared. That’s why the MP Design Group team was hired to create a feasibility study on housing development. To do this, they use drone LiDAR technology to create terrain surveys of old golf courses more efficiently. However, due to the imminent bad weather and the proximity of Keesler Air Force Base, we must also fight in Class D airspace. “Down to Earth” is a documentary-style reality series that shows how real-life surveyors can collect data and transform it into real-life deliverables, despite difficult situations, hidden dangers, and bad weather.

In this first episode, MP Design Group’s Vice President of Field Services, Greg Thompson, PS has put together a plan to scan an abandoned golf course with construction inspector and drone pilot Ryeley Jacobs. According to Thompson, “The mdLiDAR1000LR has the ability to invade canopy and lush areas, collect more ground topographical data and provide engineers with a better design aspect and much more. You can complete more jobs because you can provide data in a fast way.

As MP Design Group owner David Machado is familiar with, completing more work is the key to growing your business. “The big difference between LiDAR technology and traditional surveying is time and effort,” explains Machado. “This is just a complete change in the approach we have used in the competition in surveying. We have also changed the time frame, significantly reducing the time it takes to provide our clients, and the important data they are looking for. We are now able to provide it. “

In the third and final episode of LiDAR in the course, when fieldwork is complete, Thompson reviews and processes the data collected from the mdLiDAR1000LR to create the final deliverable for the customer. He uses mdInfinity processing software to convert raw survey data into the files needed to create 3D point clouds on the surface of the earth. “The mdLiDAR1000LR was able to provide about 62 million points in this short 22-minute flight,” said Thompson. “Therefore, there is enough data available to create the required terrain survey.”
