Tee-up of an abandoned golf course for development by drone surveying

MP Design Group initiates redevelopment process using drone LiDAR technology

Greg Thompson and Ryeley Jacobs prepare the mdLiDAR1000LR for the project.

Rome, NY– On an abandoned golf course in Biloxi, Mississippi, greens have grown, fairways have become part of the rough, and tee boxes have disappeared. That’s why the MP Design Group team was hired to create a feasibility study on housing development. To do this, they use drone LiDAR technology to create terrain surveys of old golf courses more efficiently. However, due to the imminent bad weather and the proximity of Keesler Air Force Base, we must also fight in Class D airspace. Down to Earth: See how they address these challenges and more in these new episodes of LiDAR for the Course.

“Down to Earth” is a documentary-style reality series that shows how real-life surveyors can collect data and transform it into real-life deliverables, despite difficult situations, hidden dangers, and bad weather.

MP Design Group uses drone technology to scan abandoned golf courses.

In this first episode, MP Design Group’s Vice President of Field Services, Greg Thompson, PS has put together a plan to scan an abandoned golf course with construction inspector and drone pilot Ryeley Jacobs. According to Thompson, “The mdLiDAR1000LR has the ability to invade canopy and lush areas, collect more ground topographical data and provide engineers with a better design aspect and much more. You can complete more jobs because you can provide data in a fast way.

As MP Design Group owner David Machado is familiar with, completing more work is the key to growing your business. “The big difference between LiDAR technology and traditional surveying is time and effort,” explains Machado. “This is just a complete change in the approach we have used in the competition in surveying. We have also changed the time frame, significantly reducing the time it takes to provide our clients, and the important data they are looking for. We are now able to provide it. “

Greg Thompson reviews a 3D point cloud of an abandoned golf course.

In 2nd In the episode, Greg and Riley try to tee up the drone on an abandoned golf course, complete a project in one day, and give them the opportunity to work on another project the next day. Jacobs is confident that Microdrones technology will help complete both tasks much faster than traditional surveying methods. “The main thing in Microdrones products is the time spent on these tasks. Time and budget are the most important things in the industry, and drones have been very helpful.”

In the third and final episode of LiDAR in the course, when fieldwork is complete, Thompson reviews and processes the data collected from the mdLiDAR1000LR to create the final deliverable for the customer. He uses mdInfinity processing software to convert raw survey data into the files needed to create 3D point clouds on the surface of the earth. “The mdLiDAR1000LR was able to provide about 62 million points in this short 22-minute flight,” said Thompson. “Therefore, there is enough data available to create the required terrain survey.”
